Today is:
Letchworth Civic Trust
Serving the residents of the garden city since 1913

What is the Civic Trust?
It is a Company Limited by Guarantee (135234) and a Registered Charity (273336). It is administered by ten trustees of whom the County Council nominate one, and the District Council and Heritage Foundation two each. It exists to promote education, welfare, health and recreation in the Garden City. It makes awards and loans to individuals and organizations by distributing all or most of its annual income each year.

How is it funded?
In 1913, just ten years after Letchworth Garden City was founded, Ebenezer Howard and nine others established the Trust encouraging public-spirited citizens to donate or bequeath money for the benefit of the community.
At first income was modest but in the 1960's several citizens, in particular, Dr Norman Macfadyen, bequeathed a considerable sum of money to the Trust.
Advised by the then secretary, Mr Horace Plinston, the trustees made a number of wise investments. The annual income from those investments, together with (currently) an annual donation of £10,000 from the Heritage Foundation, enables today's trustees each year to make grants and awards which total around £60,000.

We still receive donations and legacies from public-spirited individuals.
If you would like to remember the work of The Letchworth Civic Trust in your will, then you should contact your solicitor for advice, or alternatively BBW-Solicitors with whom the Letchworth Civic Trust has had a long association. They will be pleased to assist you.

So, who benefits?
In a typical year about 200 individuals, particularly, but not exclusively, young people and about 20 local groups or organizations.

What sort of people?
Students who have lived in Letchworth for at least two years, and have gained a university place, will, on application, usually receive a grant of £300 towards the cost of books and learning materials. When they reach their third year at university they may apply for a 'top-up' of another £100.

School pupils in a family that is finding great difficulty in supporting a school activity, particularly a residential field visit or camp, and which the headteacher believes would benefit the child, often receive a grant of up to £60 towards the costs. There are more than a hundred of these awards each year.

Support is given to community groups needing to improve their premises or support an event.

Disabled individuals with mobility problems are also helped.

Bursaries are sometimes available to exceptionally talented musicians, athletes, swimmers, etc..
